Pregnant: your nutrition questions

During pregnancy, questions from mothers-to-be about their diet follow on from one another, and this is quite normal. What should you eat for your health and that of your baby? What precautionary measures should be taken? When is it necessary to revise its diet?… We answer all your questions.
1-Future mom: don’t have any more doubts about your diet
An anthology of the nutritional questions most often asked by mothers-to-be. With, of course, our enlightened answers!
2-Do you have remedies for morning sickness?
To avoid unpleasant morning sickness, try not getting up right away and have breakfast served to you in bed (take advantage of it, you have a good excuse!). You can also try homeopathic treatments.
3-Since I’m pregnant, I nibble all the time…
Stop there, especially if it’s about cakes and other sweets! Small pleasures are of course not to be proscribed, but within the limits of reasonableness. Because, the excess of kilos during pregnancy (over 13 kg) can be difficult to lose afterwards… If your cravings for snacks are too hard to curb, give preference to fruit.
4-On has just detected a gestational diabetes…
This does indeed happen during pregnancy, but in most cases the problem is solved by following a diet specially “concocted” by a dietician. Monitoring your blood sugar level will tell you if you need to be put on insulin (which is very rare!). The good news is that gestational diabetes usually disappears after delivery.
5- I’m in early pregnancy and I’m losing weight
Not necessarily. The first few months of pregnancy often rhyme with fatigue, nausea and vomiting… which can be the cause of your weight loss. Perhaps you also already had fat “reserves” that Baby went to draw from? If the doubt persists, do not hesitate to consult your doctor.
6- Is it advisable to eat eggs during pregnancy?
Of course it is! Sources of vitamin A, essential for the growth of the foetus, and vitamin D, which reinforces its ossification, eggs also provide protein, iron and energy. In short, real allies for mothers-to-be!
7-Some breads are to be preferred during pregnancy?
No, not really. All breads are good because they provide the necessary carbohydrates for expectant mothers, thus avoiding “small dietary drops”. A piece of advice: think of wholemeal bread, it facilitates the intestinal transit which is often disturbed during pregnancy…
8-Are all fish good for pregnant women?
At the risk of displeasing you, forget your sushi cravings during pregnancy because raw fish is to be avoided. It can, indeed, be at the origin of listeriosis. Instead, prefer farmed fish, such as salmon, and don’t overindulge in large fish such as tuna, sea bream or swordfish, which can contain high levels of mercury, which can be harmful to the fetus.
9-How to protect yourself from listeriosis?
You can limit the risk of listeriosis by simply avoiding eating deli meats, cheeses, smoked fish, raw shellfish, surimi, tarama. Because these foods (as good as they are!) can harbour listeria, a dangerous bacterium for Baby. No need to take risks!
10- Pregnant, better to prefer tea or coffee?
Difficult to say, because coffee and tea both contain an excitant (caffeine and theine) that Baby could do without. That’s why, in any case, no more than one or two cups a day! Also note that drinking tea decreases your iron absorption. What if you tried chicory or tea without theine? Here is a good compromise!
11-Pregnant and thin, I am encouraged to eat more…
Indeed, you need reserves in which Baby will go to eat. Moreover, it is said that a thin woman can gain up to 18 kg (contrary to the 12 kg recommended in general). So, enjoy yourself, without excess and always in a balanced way of course!
