Prepare for the Catalina update by putting your Mac back into battle order

This fall, Apple will unveil the latest version of its Mac operating system, called Catalina. Of course, you can update your Mac without any special preparation, but a new version of macOS is the perfect time to put your computer back in order. It would be a shame to install a new operating system on a disk full of malware, loose software or unused or corrupted files, wouldn’t it? The best way to get your Mac off to a good start with Catalina is CleanMyMac X, the latest version of MacPaw’s system optimizer. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

1 – Smart Scanning

After installing the software, you just need to launch the Smart Scan function of the program, which runs with one click. It activates the 5 modules of the software: cleaning, protection, performance, applications and files. Once the scan is complete, you have the last word: as far as file deletion and maintenance tasks are concerned, nothing is launched without your permission.

2 – Cleanup

The Software Cleanup module examines every corner of your computer for a variety of unused or unnecessary files and functions in several areas of the system. System Residue Scanning tracks old cache and registry entries, broken application data, unused translations and redundant versions of documents created by Sketch, Pages, Keynote and Numbers. Photo Residue Scanning looks for full-size redundant copies of modified images in Photos, as well as face identification cache files and localized versions of photos already stored in the cloud. Attachment scanning detects resources that clutter your system with files associated with emails, such as local copies of attachments, logos and images. Finally, iTunes file scanning will help you reduce the size of your music library, and trashcanning ensures that everything you’ve thrown in the trash is effectively deleted.

3 – Protection

The latest version of CleanMyMac has a comprehensive security database, which is used from the initial scan to identify malicious files such as adware, viruses, spyware, and cryptographic minors. The second a threat is identified, you have the ability to eliminate it without further delay. An additional privacy module allows you to instantly delete all traces of your Mac activities, such as your chat history, cookies, downloads, and all other files that track your daily activities.

4 – Performance

The software’s Performance module detects potential sources of slowdown and allows you to disable them. It will identify launch or login modules, as well as applications that no longer respond or use too many resources. In addition, this module provides you with regular maintenance functions, including disk access repair, RAM release and DNS cache emptying to fix network and other problems.

5 – Applications

Even if you uninstall software by dragging it into the recycle bin (and emptying it), it often leaves files behind. The Applications module efficiently tracks them down and allows you to delete them. This feature is also able to spot applications you no longer use and places them in a category that you can inspect at any time, so you can keep only the most useful ones. The software is also able to search for and launch software updates.

6 – Files

Finally, the Files module classifies each file on your computer according to its size, type and access date. This provides you with a handy list for deleting large files you never use, simplifying a task that could otherwise take hours.
